Background of the Study
Discourse markers are integral to the structure and coherence of public speeches, serving as linguistic cues that organize ideas and guide listeners through the narrative. In Enugu, public figures and speakers often employ Igbo discourse markers to signal transitions, emphasize points, and manage the flow of information during speeches (Nwankwo, 2023). These markers—such as fillers, transitional phrases, and intonational cues—play a critical role in ensuring that messages are clearly understood and that speakers maintain audience engagement. In Igbo public speeches, the strategic use of discourse markers reflects a blend of traditional oratory practices and contemporary influences from formal education and media exposure. However, as communication styles evolve due to globalization and digital media, the traditional repertoire of Igbo discourse markers may be altered, potentially affecting the clarity and impact of public discourse (Okafor, 2024). This study investigates the use and function of discourse markers in Igbo public speeches in Enugu, analyzing their role in facilitating effective communication and preserving cultural oratorical traditions.

Statement of the Problem
The traditional use of discourse markers in Igbo public speeches is facing challenges from evolving communication styles in Enugu. The integration of modern rhetoric may lead to inconsistencies and a dilution of culturally specific markers, potentially undermining the effectiveness of public discourse (Nwankwo, 2023). As speakers adapt to new norms, the clarity and impact of their messages might be compromised, creating a gap in our understanding of how these markers are transforming in contemporary contexts (Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To document key Igbo discourse markers in public speeches.

  • To assess their effectiveness in enhancing speech coherence.

  • To propose strategies to preserve traditional markers.

Research Questions

  • What discourse markers are most prevalent in Igbo public speeches?

  • How do these markers contribute to speech coherence?

  • What measures can ensure their effective use?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the role of discourse markers in Igbo public speeches in Enugu, providing insights that can enhance the clarity and cultural resonance of political and public communication. The findings will aid speechwriters, educators, and cultural scholars in preserving effective oratorical traditions (Nwankwo, 2023; Okafor, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Igbo public speeches in Enugu and does not cover private or informal discourse.

Definitions of Terms

  • Discourse Markers: Words or phrases that organize speech.

  • Public Speeches: Formal addresses delivered to an audience.

  • Igbo Language: The indigenous language of the Igbo people.
